Three Unusually Large 19th Century Mercury Glass Witches Balls.
£0.00
A collection of three large rare handblown English mercury glass witches balls. Circa 1880-1900. Each hollow sphere has a good gauge thickness of glass whist the interior is coated with mercury. Later added cast bronze galleries with hanging loops.
Witch balls were hung up in 18th and 19th-century windows to ward off evil spirits. It was believed that witches could be entrapped by their own reflection.
Each in good order, no damage or cracks. Tarnishing/spotting and scatted loss of mercury.
Largest green ball 30cm diameter.
Smaller blue and green 21cm diameter.
