A well executed 19th century oil on canvas portrait study of a ships captain by Italian artist Luigi Renault, Active 1845–1877.

L.Renault lived and worked in Trieste and Leghorn (both in Italy) 
He painted mainly Ship Portraits of Italian, British and American sailing vessels with occasional portraits of ships captains. He was a talented and very productive artist, later being appointed marine artist to King Victor Emanuel of Italy. He started early in his life to paint ships and was apparently trained by his father Michele Renault (fl. 1840-68), who was a Ship Portrait Artist as well. 

The canvas has a new pine stretcher. Various slight scuffs, pressure mark to top right corner. 

Overall in good order.
